What is Coaching? - New Coaching Research Now Available

Recently, my co-researchers, Tatiana Bachkirova and Adrian Myers, and I completed research funded by a grant from Harvard’s Institute of Coaching. Under this grant, we developed an 80 item instrument that can be used to describe what happens in a coaching session.

How to Find a Good Personal / Life Coach or Executive Coach

Top 10 Qualities to Look for When Picking a Coach

Coaching is a relatively new field, so there is much less research about what works in coaching than there is about what works in fields such as therapy. Also, anyone can call himself or herself a coach, so it is particularly important to consider how to identify someone who is likely to help you.

Organizational Change

My approach to coaching

Coaching for results with long term traction

To create lasting change, I believe it is necessary to go just deep enough to identify and address obstacles that can get in the way of change, but no deeper.

Weight loss coaching - when a diet is not enough

What if there were a better way to find out what gets in the way of losing weight and keeping it off?

How many times have you tried to lose weight? On average, people gain back all of the weight they have lost, and more. Fewer than 10% of those who lose weight keep it off.

Psychotherapy for the Helping Professions

Help for those who help others

If you are a counselor, psychotherapist, or coach there may be times when you find it draining to take care of your clients. It's not unusual to wonder what it would be like to be the client – to have someone you can trust who will deeply understand you and be there for you. Hopefully, this is what you provide to your clients, but many helping professionals haven't experienced it for themselves.

New years resolutions 2011 - Immunity to change coaching can help

Another year, another set of new years resolutions. Make this the year you succeed at keeping your resolutions, with a coach who knows how to help you overcome your natural immunity to change.

We all have immunity systems that make some changes difficult, but not impossible. Here are the steps I would use when helping you reach your goal with immunity to change coaching:

It makes perfect sense that we act the way we do

Recently, I was thinking about a common element across a lot of the work I do. Whether through coaching or counseling / psychotherapy, my clients and I get to a place where it makes sense that my clients are doing what they are doing, even though they truly want to change. And, importantly, it makes sense in a way that doesn't pathologize anyone. It's the best strategy they have found, so far, to accomplish something important - perhaps being successful, protecting themselves, or avoiding even worse consequences.

Group Coaching

In a coaching group you can learn from others and save money

In a coaching based group, you can work with others to reach goals that you are pursuing while sharing ideas and support. As and added bonus, group coaching is less expensive than individual coaching.

A new group is starting shortly for 20-somethings who want to develop and practice their social skills.

Groups start as needed to focus on how to help each member accomplish his or her goals using the "overcoming immunity to change" process.

Personal & Life Coaching

Self-help books can only take you so far

Buying the right self-help book is clearly not enough. Reading the book is often also insufficient, as most of us don't have the motivation and follow-through to do everything the book says by ourselves, even if we agree with what the author suggests. One day we look at our bookshelf and see a row of self-help books, but little progress.
